Plot summary
Joe Norson has lost his job at a gas station and works part time as a mailman, living in New York City with his wife Ellen and her parents. Ellen is pregnant, and Joe wants more than his wages can give her. On his route he pockets an envelope from the office of a lawyer, expecting a couple of hundred dollars, and finds $30,000. The cash belongs to Victor Backett, an attorney who took it from broker Emil Lorrison after framing him in a scandal, with help from Lucille "Lucky" Colner and ex-convict Georgie Garsell. Joe panics, tells Ellen the money came from an out-of-town job, and gives the cash to a bartender, Nick Drumman, to hold.
