Plot summary
A nuclear war leaves the Earth contaminated with radioactive fallout. A lone exception is an isolated box canyon ringed by lead-bearing cliffs, where Jim, a former U.S. Navy commander, lives with his daughter Louise in a house he stockpiled with supplies against such a disaster. Louise's fiancé is missing, and his photograph stays on her nightstand. Survivors who happened to be inside the canyon when the war began come to the house: Rick, a geologist who specializes in uranium mining; Tony, a small-time hood, and Ruby, his moll, who were traveling to San Francisco. Jim refuses them at first, then relents when Louise appeals to him. The fallout may not dissipate before the next rain washes it down onto the canyon.

- Effects creator Blaisdell made the mutant costume from foam rubber, with claws bought from a magic shop and toenails carved from white pine, and designed it so cramped inside that only a small man like himself could fit.
