Dane Cook

Biography

Dane Cook is an American comedian and film actor whose stand-up blends long-form storytelling with observational and sometimes vulgar humor. Born in Boston in 1972, he started performing in comedy clubs in 1990 and moved to New York four years later, landing his break with an appearance on Comedy Central's Premium Blend in 1998. His albums include Harmful If Swallowed (2003) and Retaliation (2005), which reached the top five on the Billboard charts, the first comedy record to do so in 27 years, and went double platinum. He drew a large following through his own website and Myspace. On screen he took leading roles in Employee of the Month (2006), Good Luck Chuck (2007) and My Best Friend's Girl (2008), played a dramatic part in Mr. Brooks (2007), and voiced Dusty Crophopper in Planes (2013) and Planes: Fire & Rescue (2014). He was the second comic to sell out the large arena at Madison Square Garden.

On April 10, 2007, Dane Cook set a new Laugh Factory endurance record. His stage performance lasted three hours and 50 minutes, surpassing the mark Richard Pryor had previously held.

  2. A first

Cook put out his second CD/DVD, Retaliation, in 2005. It went double platinum and made him the first comic in 27 years with a top 5 Billboard album, after Steve Martin's A Wild and Crazy Guy.

Cook's first television part came in 1995, when he played Kyle, a quarterback, on the ABC comedy Maybe This Time. Marie Osmond, Betty White and Ashley Johnson also appeared in the show.

  4. A role that slipped away

In 2010, Cook said he tried out for Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger. Director Joe Johnston did not include him among the candidates for that role.

  5. A change of course

Cook studied graphic design in college as a backup plan in case comedy did not work out, and he later designed his own merchandise, including the cover of Harmful If Swallowed.
