Plot summary

Marie Francoise Thérèse Martin, born in 1873, is the youngest of Louis and Zelie Martin's children. Her mother dies of breast cancer when Thérèse is four, and her oldest sister, Pauline, becomes a second mother to her. The girl is sensitive, quick to tears, and yet has a simple love of God. On Christmas Eve in 1886, home from Midnight Mass, she hears her father say he must play Father Christmas for a girl of thirteen; she runs upstairs crying, and a sense of charity enters her, and her childish woundedness leaves her. She wants to join the Carmelite monastery at Lisieux at fifteen, and her father takes her to the bishop, and then to Rome, for permission.
