Plot summary
The De La Salle High School Spartans of Concord, California, have not lost a football game in over a decade, and their coach, Bob Ladouceur, tells them the winning streak was never the goal. He asks for perfect effort on every play and treats the team as a brotherhood. His wife, Bev, thinks he should at least open the college coaching offers he keeps discarding, and she wants him to spend more time with the family. At a district coaches meeting, other schools refuse to schedule De La Salle and accuse the program of taking the best players from their backyards. Ladouceur answers that many of his players come from underprivileged homes and ride city buses for hours to be there. Assistant coach Terry Eidson arranges a game against Long Beach Poly, a top team in the country.
