Plot summary
In 1977, Piper Dellums, a Black girl in Washington, D.C., asks her parents, Congressman Ron Dellums and Roscoe Dellums, to host an African exchange student. Her father is an outspoken opponent of apartheid in South Africa. Mahree Bok is white and lives on a farm in Dundee, South Africa, where her father Pieter is a policeman and Flora is the family's Black maid. Mahree asks to study in America, and Pieter agrees, expecting his daughter to grow homesick or to find America less than a paradise. When Mahree reaches the Dellums house, she does not expect a Black host family, and the Dellumses do not know their student is white.
