Plot summary
Jim Craig has spent his eighteen years on his father's farm in the Australian mountains, where wild horses known as brumbies roam. When the herd tramples the yard he and Henry are building, the Craigs' own horse runs off with it and Henry is killed. His father's farm cannot pass to him until he earns the right to it, the mountain men say, by working in the lowlands. Spur, a one-legged miner and a friend of Henry's, gives Jim a horse, and a recommendation gets him work at the station of Harrison, a rancher. Clancy arrives to lead a cattle muster. Jim is not allowed on the round-up, and he falls in love with Jessica, Harrison's daughter.

- The film grossed A$17,228,160 in Australia, the highest for an Australian film until Crocodile Dundee arrived four years later, and it was briefly the highest-grossing film of any kind in Australia until E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial surpassed it.
- Tom Burlinson had ridden a horse only a few times before being cast; he was taught to ride by mountain cattleman Charlie Lovick, who owned the buckskin horse Burlinson rode in the film.
- Burt Lancaster and Robert Mitchum were considered for the dual role of Harrison and Spur before Kirk Douglas was cast in the roles.
- The Craigs' Hut building was a permanent fixture created for the film in Clear Hills, east of Mount Stirling, Victoria; the popular 4WD and hiking landmark was destroyed in bushfires on 11 December 2006 and has since been rebuilt.
- The film grossed A$33 million outside Australia for a worldwide total of A$50 million, and Kirk Douglas sued Burrowes for a share of the profits.
