Joan Hackett

Biography

Joan Hackett was an American actress who worked in film, television, and theater. She grew up in Elmhurst, Queens, and made her television debut in 1959 as Gail Prentiss on Young Doctor Malone. Off-Broadway, her 1961 performance as Chris in Call Me By My Rightful Name won her an Obie Award, a Theatre World Award, and a Drama Desk Award. She later had a recurring part on the CBS legal drama The Defenders, and her films included The Group (1966), a role that earned her a BAFTA nomination, the Western Will Penny (1967), the Western comedy Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969), the murder mystery The Last of Sheila (1973), and The Terminal Man (1974). She won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award for Only When I Laugh (1981). She also appeared in the PBS miniseries Mourning Becomes Electra and was a regular on the sitcom Another Day.
