Plot summary

In 1876, Holly and Jason Smith, two orphans, set out to claim 400 acres in Salem, Oregon, at the end of the Oregon Trail. Their route takes them across the Rocky Mountains. They meet Zachariah Coop, a gambler with angry men pursuing him, who asks to travel with them; at first the two children are unsure whether he can be trusted.
