Plot summary
Charlotte Sutter, eldest daughter of the pioneer family Sutter, is carried off by a mysterious Indian tribe. Her father John gathers a search party, and her brother Sam goes after her by himself. Sam almost drowns, and a broken-down prospector known as Russian and his dog pull him out. Russian knows the country, and Sam persuades him to help hunt for the tribe, reminding him of the gold arm rings its people wear. The two come upon a Cheyenne band whose medicine man needs them to find the Crooked Sky.
