Plot summary
Phil Blackwood writes mystery novels, and his recent ones have grown so predictable that sales are slipping. He sits through court trials for something to do and is well behind on the book he owes. At the arraignment of Nina Ionescu, a Romanian charged with murder, he is struck by her and believes she cannot have done it. Visiting her disguised as a Roman Catholic priest while she waits on bail, he takes her refusal to confess as a sign of innocence. His friend and agent Sam helps him invent an affair between them so a judge will release her into his care. She moves into his house under his supervision and shows skill with thrown knives.
