Jodi Benson
Biography
The American actress and singer Jodi Benson is known for giving Ariel her voice in Disney's The Little Mermaid (1989), a role she also voiced in its sequel, prequel, and television spin-off. Born in Rockford, Illinois, and educated at Millikin University, she began onstage in the 1983 production Marilyn: An American Fable and later appeared on Broadway in Smile and Welcome to the Club. She earned a Tony Award nomination for her performance in Crazy For You in 1992. Her voice work includes Barbie in Toy Story 2 (1999) and Toy Story 3 (2010), Weebo in Flubber (1997), and Lady in Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure (2001). She also appeared in Thumbelina (1994) and played Sam in Enchanted (2007). On television she voiced Tula in The Pirates of Dark Water and Jane Doe and Patsy Smiles in Camp Lazlo. Disney named her a Disney Legend in 2011.

Big break
Benson first heard about the Little Mermaid audition from lyricist Howard Ashman, with whom she had just worked on the Broadway show Smile. After recording part of the song Part of Your World for Disney executives, she won the role of Ariel in early 1988.
A role that slipped away
Benson was set to return as Sam in Disenchanted, the 2022 film, but the scene she filmed did not make it into the movie.
A first
From 1992 to 2011, Benson was Mattel and Pixar's official Barbie voice, working on projects like Toy Story and Dance! Workout with Barbie. Kate Higgins then took over the role, beginning with Life in the Dreamhouse.
