Plot summary
Ned Fleming marks his fifty-fifth birthday at an Applebee's in Grand Rapids with his wife Barb, their son Scotty and his friends, when his daughter Stephanie appears by webcam from Stanford and her boyfriend Laird Mayhew interrupts the call. Stephanie collects the family at the airport and drives them to Laird's Silicon Valley villa, where he heads a video game company. He swears freely, comments on Barb and shows them a tattoo of their Christmas card and a basement bowling alley painted with a picture of Ned. Ned objects to the way Laird behaves, and Stephanie asks him to give the man a chance. Walking in the woods, Laird asks Ned to consent to a marriage proposal; Ned declines at once.
