Plot summary
London, 1957. Ada Harris supports herself by cleaning other people's homes, and the people she works for give her scant thought in return. Her friends Vi and Archie are close to her. When she sees a client's haute couture Dior gown, she wants one of her own. She saves for months, then a war widow's pension arrives unexpectedly and she leaves for Paris to buy a dress. There she walks into a showing of Dior's tenth-anniversary collection, where André, the house's accountant, and Natasha, one of its models, befriend her. Claudine, the director, dislikes this intruder in the closed world of haute couture and will not accept her as a client at first. The house is in financial difficulty, however, and it agrees to a commission paid in cash.
