Early training
Picking's high school math teacher pushed him to give acting a try, so he studied with Carolyn Pickman, a casting agent whose clients included Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
A change of course
While at New York University, Picking played winger for the New York ice hockey team. He left business school after a year, drawn to acting and student films, and had appeared in an NHL commercial as a hockey player before acting.
Getting ready for a role
Jake Picking moved to Los Angeles to begin acting professionally. There, feeling lonely in his one-room apartment, he first studied old Hollywood films starring actors like James Dean, Paul Newman, Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift.
