Plot summary
Dr. Alan Stone leaves New York University in 1954 and takes a post at the Ypsilanti State Mental Asylum, where he works directly with patients, concentrating on schizophrenia and criticizing the system's habits. In the 1950s such patients are mostly confined and sedated, with insulin shock therapy and electric shocks in common use and little talk therapy. At the asylum Stone meets Joseph Cassell, a short intellectual who believes he is Jesus Christ, and Clyde Benson, a gruff patient with the same conviction. He has Leon Gabor, a third man who also calls himself Christ, transferred there so the three can be studied together, and finds their troubles entirely different. Stone builds group talk therapy and gives up physical punishment, talking with the men and writing them letters, while colleagues including the asylum's head, Dr. Orbus, doubt his approach.
