Biography
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Jane Alexander is an American-Canadian actress and author whose career spans theater, film, and television. After studying theater at Sarah Lawrence College, she made her Broadway debut in 1963 as a standby in A Thousand Clowns. Her breakthrough came in 1967 at Arena Stage in Howard Sackler's The Great White Hope; she went on to win a Tony Award for the Broadway production and received an Academy Award nomination for the film version released in 1970. Further Oscar nominations followed for All the President's Men (1976), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), and Testament (1983). On television she has won two Primetime Emmy Awards, for Playing for Time (1980) and Warm Springs (2005), and earned an Emmy nomination for Eleanor and Franklin (1976), in which she played Eleanor Roosevelt. Her other screen credits include Brubaker (1980), The Cider House Rules (1999), and Fur (2006).
