Plot summary
On April 26, 2003, Aron Ralston sets out through Canyonlands National Park in Utah without telling anyone where he is going. He meets Kristi and Megan, two hikers who have lost their way, gives them directions and shows them an underground pool, and they invite him to a party the following night. He goes on alone into a slot canyon in Bluejohn Canyon. While he is climbing, an 800-pound boulder comes loose and falls with him, wedging his right arm against the wall. It will not move. He is alone, with a camcorder, a pocket knife, his climbing gear and a small supply of food and water.

- During early screenings at the Telluride Film Festival, one audience member became lightheaded and was taken out on a gurney, and another viewer at a later screening suffered a panic attack.
- One detail from Ralston's own story was changed for the film: his bike was actually chained to itself, not to the tree as depicted at the beginning of the movie.
- Makeup effects designer Tony Gardner and his company, Alterian, built the film's prosthetic arm in layers, from fiberglass and steel bone through silicone muscle to a translucent silicone skin, to make the amputation look convincing.
