Plot summary
Thomas Avery is an ophthalmologist from Ventura, California, whose estranged adult son Daniel dies in a storm in the Pyrenees while walking the Camino de Santiago. Tom travels to France to retrieve the body, then chooses to walk the pilgrimage route himself, carrying Daniel's ashes. New to long-distance trekking, he is joined by three other pilgrims: Joost, a friendly, heavyset man from Amsterdam who hopes to slim down before his brother's wedding and to win back his wife's desire; Sarah, a Canadian who says she wants to quit smoking; and Jack, an Irish travel writer who has stalled on the novel he long meant to write. Tom stays cold toward them at the start.
