Eddie Acuff
Biography
Eddie Acuff was a Hollywood supporting actor who popped up in more than 250 movies and a single television episode across a career of about eighteen years. An uncle on his mother's side, who had worked the showboats of the Mississippi, drew him to acting, and he began with stage work, taking minor Broadway roles in plays such as The Dark Hour, Heat Lightning and Yellow Jack. In films he was usually a face in the crowd, playing cabbies, reporters, cameramen, cowboys and bus drivers, though he had a recurring run as the clumsy mail carrier in the Blondie films, a part he took over from Irving Bacon, and he was often cast as the wise-cracking fellow who knew better. His credits included The Petrified Forest (1936) and They Drive by Night (1940), and he worked steadily from 1934 to 1951. He died in 1956.
