George Beranger
Biography
George Beranger was an Australian-born actor, director, and screenwriter who worked in silent and sound films. Born in Sydney, he studied acting at a school founded by Walter Bentley. He began playing Shakespearean roles at sixteen with the Walter Bentley Players before emigrating to California in 1912. He became a star in the 1920s, appearing in films by Ernst Lubitsch and D. W. Griffith, and directed sixteen films between 1914 and 1924. His silent roles often cast him as a sophisticate or dandy, while early sound films relegated him to non-speaking walk-ons and bit parts. In the 1940s he played speaking bit parts in film noirs such as Nightmare Alley (1947) and Road House (1948), receiving a rare screen credit for the latter. He retired in 1952 and died in 1973.
