Biography

Richard Ayoade is a British comedian and actor who also writes, directs and presents. Born in Hammersmith, London, he led the Footlights club at Cambridge and won a Perrier Comedy Award for the Garth Marenghi stage shows, later co-creating Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. He became known as Maurice Moss in The IT Crowd, winning a BAFTA for Best Male Comedy Performance. After directing music videos for Arctic Monkeys and Vampire Weekend, he wrote and directed Submarine, which earned a BAFTA nomination for outstanding debut, and then directed The Double. He co-starred in The Watch (2012) and voiced characters in The Boxtrolls (2014), Early Man (2018), The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019), Soul (2020), The Bad Guys (2022) and its 2025 sequel. He presented Gadget Man, Travel Man and The Crystal Maze, appeared in The Souvenir (2019) and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023), and has written several film-focused books.

  1. A role that slipped away

    Ayoade was originally cast as villain Dixon Bainbridge in The Mighty Boosh, but a Channel 4 contract limited him to the pilot, so Matt Berry took over the part.

    Graham Linehan wrote the part of Maurice Moss in The IT Crowd specifically for Ayoade, who played the socially awkward IT technician from 2006.

    While a law student at Cambridge, Ayoade was president of the Footlights club, whose contemporaries included David Mitchell and John Oliver.

    Ayoade and Matthew Holness debuted their characters Dean Learner and Garth Marenghi at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2000, where the show was nominated for a Perrier Award.

  5. Behind the camera

    In 2011, Ayoade directed the second season Community episode "Critical Film Studies." The episode is a tribute to the 1981 movie My Dinner with Andre.
