Plot summary
Michael Harlan is a high school senior whose only interest is muscle cars, and he will flunk science unless he turns in a final project. His bookworm friend Ellie Sawyer thinks their outing is a date when he breaks into a government aircraft boneyard, where he finds a hidden fallout shelter and grabs a glowing, plasma globe-like piece of scientific equipment. A military guard chases him away. In auto shop class the next day he cleans the device, and it leeches power from a nearby boombox.
