Plot summary

A nuclear war burns through the world's arsenal and leaves a single missile behind. Two boys, Philip Chandler and Marlowe Hammer, grow up sealed in a fallout shelter cut into a wooded mountain, where detective fiction and swing music shape everything they learn. The day the entrance opens, they cut each other's hair, put on suits, and step out into a landscape stripped of trees. The first people they meet are radiation-burned mutants chasing a woman named Miles Archer. The pair rescue her; she kisses Marlowe, takes his gun, and drops the activation keys to the last missile. She leaves, and the pair are set upon by a gang of bald women wearing red wigs. The boys find activation keys bearing their fathers' names. Marlowe is excited; Philip is troubled.
