Biography

Josephine Hutchinson was an American actress who worked across theater, film, and television. Born in Seattle, she was the daughter of the actress Leona Roberts, and those connections helped her land a film debut at 13 in The Little Princess. She studied at the Cornish School, then moved to New York City and began a stage career that included a Broadway debut in The Bird Cage in 1925 and roles in plays such as The Cherry Orchard and Hedda Gabler. Signed by Warner Bros., she went to Hollywood in 1934 and made her debut that year opposite Dick Powell in Happiness Ahead. She became a leading lady at Universal as Elsa von Frankenstein in Son of Frankenstein, and later appeared as the sister of the villain Vandamm in North by Northwest. On television she guest starred on Perry Mason four times and in The Twilight Zone, and she kept working in supporting roles through the 1970s.
