Nina Foch

Biography

Nina Foch was a Dutch-born American actress who built a long screen career and later became a drama instructor. Born in Leiden and raised in New York City, she trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts under Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler, then signed with Columbia Pictures at 19 and made her film debut in The Return of the Vampire (1943). She became known for cool, aloof sophisticates in dramas and film noirs such as My Name Is Julia Ross (1945), Johnny O'Clock (1947) and The Dark Past (1948), and earned an Academy Award nomination for Executive Suite (1954). Other films included An American in Paris (1951), The Ten Commandments (1956), Spartacus (1960) and Mahogany (1975). She also worked extensively in television, directed a Broadway production of Ways and Means in 1967, and taught directing at USC and the American Film Institute for more than 40 years. She died in 2008.
