Plot summary
At the San Diego Marine base, Master Gunnery Sergeant James O'Hearn stands accused of desertion, theft and scandalous conduct in wartime. He refuses to testify and will not enter a plea. Showgirl Ginger Martin takes the witness stand despite his protest and says he is staying quiet to protect his friend Davy White. She recalls meeting the two Marines in Shanghai not long before the attack on Pearl Harbor, with no money and no way out of China. The 4th Marines are being pulled out of the country, and White proposes so that Ginger can leave as his wife. O'Hearn tracks him to the nightclub where Ginger works, and a fight with the manager sends the three of them fleeing aboard a motor boat.
