Biography

Wendi McLendon-Covey is an American actress and comedian who built a career on improvisation. Born in Bellflower, California, and raised in Long Beach, she joined the Los Angeles improv troupe the Groundlings after graduating from California State University, Long Beach, in 2000, staying with the group until 2009. Her first major screen role was Deputy Clementine Johnson on Reno 911!, which she later returned to, and she appeared in the film Reno 911!: Miami (2007). A breakout part in Bridesmaids (2011) led to studio comedies including What to Expect When You're Expecting (2012), Blended (2014), The Single Moms Club (2014), Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015), What Men Want (2019) and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021). She played Beverly Goldberg on the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs from 2013 to 2023, earning two Critics' Choice Television Award nominations, and has voiced Nancy Green on Big City Greens.

    McLendon-Covey was a Groundlings classmate of Kaitlin Olson, Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, and she later starred with McCarthy and Wiig in Bridesmaids.

  2. Big break

    McLendon-Covey auditioned for Deputy Clementine Johnson in Reno 911! expecting to lose the part, but she was cast and the series was then picked up by Comedy Central.

  3. A role that slipped away

    In February 2012, McLendon-Covey joined the cast of the HBO comedy pilot The Viagra Diaries, which was created by Darren Star. After Goldie Hawn left the pilot, McLendon-Covey also departed the show.

  4. Behind the camera

    McLendon-Covey played the lead in the ABC comedy The Goldbergs, which ran ten years and produced 229 episodes, and she was also a producer and later an executive producer on it.

  5. A change of course

    McLendon-Covey and Dfernando Zaremba shared hosting duties on the pop culture podcast Generation Ripe between April 2020 and July 2022. Guests from the arts and entertainment industry were interviewed, and the show was aimed at teenagers over 40.
