Plot summary

Wren Pepper is a thirty-something party girl who works the register at a stationery store. Her friends since their teenage years have moved on: Laurel runs competitive marathons and has a new partner, Cece is raising a young daughter, and Jill is busy with a toddler and a bickering husband. Wanting the old circle back, Wren tells them she has cancer. Their response is bigger than she expected, and the story she invented follows her into other rooms. She keeps it going with strangers, with her parents, Fred and Carol, and with Leo, a man she meets at a cancer support group, who has the illness she only claims.
