Trailer

Plot summary

Bernie and Cinder Lumen, fire elements, leave Fire Land for Element City, where they open the Fireplace, a convenience store, and raise their daughter Ember. Bernie plans to retire and leave the shop to Ember once she can master her temper. On a busy sale day, Ember runs the store alone, gets overwhelmed by customers and hurries to the basement, where an outburst of heat bursts a water pipe. The flood summons Wade Ripple, a water element and city inspector, who files a report that could shut the Fireplace down. Ember keeps her part in the burst pipe from her parents while she and Wade seek a way to save the store.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Elemental (2023)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Elemental used over 151,000 cores across three large rooms on the Pixar campus, a jump that forced Pixar to buy extra computers; Toy Story (1995) had run on 294 cores, Monsters, Inc. (2001) on 672 and Finding Nemo (2003) on 923.
  • Director Peter Sohn's parents both died during the making of Elemental, and he has said the film is about thanking your parents and understanding their sacrifices.
  • Writers John Hoberg and Kat Likkel pushed for an ending where Wade and Ember had a baby made of steam, but it was left out of early cuts so the two leads would get a more solid ending.
  • Peter Sohn based the story on his own childhood: his parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx, and the film draws on his experiences as the son of immigrants in 1970s New York City.
  • Because the COVID-19 pandemic kept the production team from traveling to Venice and Amsterdam for research, they watched many hours of point-of-view city tours on YouTube for inspiration for Element City.
  • Mamoudou Athie won the role of Wade Ripple because of his performance in the 2019 miniseries Oh Jerome, No and his ability to cry; director Peter Sohn called one of those cries "sincere, but hilarious".
  • Elemental is dedicated to four Pixar staff who all died in 2022, animators Ralph Eggleston, Amber Martorelli and J. Garrett Sheldrew, and film editor Thomas Gonzales, and a sign reading "Eat at Ralph's - Two cents" in Element City pays tribute to Eggleston.
