Plot summary
Gary Faulkner is an ex-con, a former construction contractor, and an unemployed handyman in Colorado, a modern day Don Quixote. He believes God has sent him to Pakistan to capture Osama bin Laden, and a vision tells him so. His only weapon is a single sword he buys from a home-shopping network, and he travels to Pakistan to complete the mission. His old friends are back home in Colorado, and in Pakistan he makes new friends. At the CIA he makes enemies. The story is a comedy, and God and Osama bin Laden themselves are among the people in it.

- Nicolas Cage said in 2020 that the released version of Army of One had been recut by Bob Weinstein without director Larry Charles's permission, and that Charles's original version stayed unreleased. In 2024 Charles posted his own cut, over an hour longer, on his YouTube channel, which runs over an hour longer.
