Plot summary
Captain Lansen sails the tramp steamer Corita out of Freetown bound for Caracas, paying no heed to a hurricane warning or to a customs launch because he is smuggling a cargo of the explosive Phosphor B. His passengers have reasons of their own for leaving Africa: Dr. Webster and his daughter Unity, Harry Tyler, and Eva Peters, who has taken bearer bonds to pay a ransom for her son in Caracas and is being followed by the lawyer Ricaldi. An anchor chain slips, the bulkhead is ruptured and the power fails, and part of the crew mutinies and departs in a lifeboat. With the storm closing in, Lansen leads the remaining crew and passengers into another boat.
