- Darryl F. Zanuck spotted suit salesman Robert Evans at the El Morocco and cast him as the young bullfighter Pedro Romero over the objections of co-stars Ava Gardner and Tyrone Power, and of Ernest Hemingway himself. Evans later took Zanuck's retort as the title of his 1994 autobiography The Kid Stays in the Picture.
- Errol Flynn's performance in the film was highly acclaimed and led to a series of roles in which he played alcoholics.
- Ava Gardner pulled out of playing Lady Brett Ashley to make Thieves Market with William Wyler, so Susan Hayward was cast in her place. Hemingway then insisted on Gardner, and Darryl Zanuck went after her and got her to sign.
- The film was shot in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico, instead of Pamplona because the trees there were not in foliage and the production could not afford to wait.
- The film places the story around 1922 rather than the novel's mid-1920s setting, and uses the song "You Do Something to Me" as a motif even though it was not written until 1929.
