Plot summary
Eddy Duchin finishes pharmacy school and heads to New York, where he expects to play piano in Leo Reisman's orchestra at a Manhattan casino. The job is gone by the time he arrives. He takes the stage anyway and his playing impresses the crowd and several influential patrons. Marjorie Oelrichs, a wealthy socialite, is taken with his piano work and comes to meet him. Her aunt and uncle, the Wadsworths, ask him to a party at their home. Lou Sherwood and the bandleader recognize his skill, and the casino gives him steady work.

- Director George Sidney said he left MGM for Columbia in order to make the film, having been taught piano by Eddy Duchin himself and having seen the pianist's last concert.
- Moss Hart dropped out as screenwriter when he fell ill, so Samuel Taylor wrote the script, with Clifford Odets doing some uncredited work on it.
- Kim Novak's appearance in ads for No-Cal diet soda was credited with some of the film's box office success; she became one of the first celebrities featured in soft-drink advertisements, each reminding readers to see her in the film.
- A 1957 Capitol Records album of nine songs from the film used pianists George Greeley and Harry Sukman, who imitated Carmen Cavallaro's interpretations of the songs rather than Eddy Duchin's own.
