Plot summary
Ranchipur is a princely state in India, where the artist Tom Ransome lives a dissolute and socially active life. His routine is broken by the arrival of Lady Edwina Esketh, once his lover and now the wife of the elderly Lord Albert Esketh. Edwina first sets out to seduce Major Rama Safti, an Indian aristocrat who has just come home from medical training in the United States. Safti intends to give his working life to the poor of Ranchipur, and he represents the new India. Fern Simon is a missionary's daughter, and Ranchipur's rulers are a Maharajah and a Maharani.

Myrna Loy, playing Lady Edwina Esketh, took director Clarence Brown's suggestion that she die with her eyes open, holding her breath until she saw stars, blurred vision and began turning blue before he finally called 'Cut!'- The Rains Came became the first film to win an Academy Award for Best Special Effects, for its earthquake and flood sequences, edging out fellow nominees The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind; it was nominated for five Oscars in all.
- Maria Ouspenskaya, who played the Maharani, was the only cast member of The Rains Came chosen for the part she played; she said she learned all she needed to know about impersonating Indian royalty from her acquaintance with Russian Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia.
