Plot summary
An MI6 agent is found dead and the film he was carrying has vanished. The service believes the Stasi killed him to hide a new rocket based on the V-2, which had already been spotted in vague photographs taken on the ground and whose existence would break international agreements. A paid source provides another set of photographs that confirm the rocket, and says his father is holding them in Kalkstadt. LeClerc, with John Avery and Haldane, settles on sending one man over the East German border to fetch the photographs and check whether the rocket is real. Leiser, a Polish defector who reached England illegally to be with a woman expecting his child, is vetted and offered citizenship if he takes the job.
