Shelley Duvall

Biography

Shelley Duvall was an American actress and producer who specialized in eccentric characters and later in children's television. Raised in Houston, she was discovered by Robert Altman, who cast her in Brewster McCloud (1970). She worked with him repeatedly, appearing in McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), Thieves Like Us (1974), and Nashville (1975), and won a Cannes Award for 3 Women (1977), which also brought a BAFTA nomination. She had a supporting part in Annie Hall (1977), played Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980) and Olive Oyl in Popeye (1980), and appeared in Time Bandits (1981) and Roxanne (1987). She created the children's anthology programs Faerie Tale Theatre and Shelley Duvall's Bedtime Stories, worked as an executive producer, earned Emmy nominations, and founded the production companies Platypus and Think Entertainment. Later credits included The Underneath (1995) and The Portrait of a Lady (1996), and after a long hiatus she returned for The Forest Hills (2023).

Getting ready for a role
Duvall improvised many of her lines, as did other cast members, even though a screenplay existed. Her work won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival and from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
Behind the camera
In 1988 Duvall founded Think Entertainment, a production company making programs and TV movies for cable channels. She had begun Platypus in 1982, and created the Showtime horror anthology Nightmare Classics.
A role that slipped away
Shelley Duvall was originally set to star in the film adaptation of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, but the project was delayed and the 1993 release featured an entirely different cast.
