Plot summary
After his release from prison, Peter Glahn sails to Mandragora, a country where the sun stays up around the clock. The crossing brings him close to Juliana Kossel. He then goes to the ostrich farm his sister Amelia runs. Amelia has fallen for Dr. Solti, a scientist who practices mesmerism. Cain Ball, the hired hand, argues with Amelia about her pledge to sell him the farm. Hunting in the forest, Peter comes upon Zephyr, a pregnant woman whose fisherman husband is elsewhere, and she falls for him. She asks a stone statue of Venus to make Peter hers, giving the goddess her wedding ring. Meeting him again, she embraces him, while he speaks of his love for Juliana and she of her marriage.
