Plot summary
An aspiring writer recovering from alcoholism, Jack Torrance takes a winter caretaker job at the Overlook Hotel, a remote resort in the Colorado Rocky Mountains that closes for the season. The manager, Stuart Ullman, tells him that a caretaker named Charles Grady killed his wife, his two daughters and himself there a decade earlier. Wendy and Danny, Jack's wife and son, come with him. In Boulder, Danny had a premonition and a seizure, and Wendy told a doctor that Jack once dislocated the boy's shoulder while drunk; Jack has been sober since. At the hotel, the head chef, Dick Hallorann, tells Danny that they share a telepathic gift his grandmother called shining, that the Overlook shines too, and warns him to stay away from Room 237.

- Slim Pickens was offered the role of Dick Hallorann in The Shining, but he told Stanley Kubrick he would only take it if his scenes needed fewer than 100 takes. Kubrick said no, and Scatman Crothers got the part.
- Jack Nicholson came up with Jack Torrance's line "Heeeere's Johnny!" himself, borrowing it from Ed McMahon's introduction to The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Kubrick had lived in England for some time, did not know the line's significance, and almost used another take.
- The door Jack chops through with an axe near the end of the film was real. Kubrick first shot the scene with a fake door, but Nicholson, a former volunteer fire marshal and California Air National Guard firefighter, cut through it too fast.
- For the international versions, Kubrick shot different takes of Wendy reading the typewriter pages containing "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" in different languages, using a suitable idiom for each: German, Italian, French and Spanish.
- In February 1979, the Colorado Lounge set at Elstree Studios was badly damaged in a fire, causing a delay in the production.
- The Steadicam shot following Danny on his Big Wheel required the rig to be mounted on a wheelchair-like platform with the operator seated and pulling a platform with the sound man; the weight caused a tire blowout one day that almost caused a serious crash, after which solid tires were mounted.
