Plot summary
Millie Lammoreaux works at a health spa that serves elderly clients in a small desert town in California, and her endless chatter drives away the people around her. The new attendant, the timid and awkward Pinky Rose, is drawn to her rather than put off. The two share an apartment at the Purple Sage, a building owned by Edgar Hart, a former Hollywood stunt double who drinks, and his wife Willie, a pregnant woman who seldom speaks and paints disturbing murals. Millie takes Pinky to Dodge City, the tavern and shooting range the Harts also run, and keeps talking about her interests and opinions. Pinky alone listens willingly. Tension enters the apartment when Millie's former roommate Deidre suddenly backs out of a dinner Millie had prepared.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about 3 Women (1977)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Robert Altman dreamed up 3 Women while his wife was in hospital and he feared she would die; in the dream he was directing Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek in an identity-theft story set against a desert backdrop. He woke mid-dream, jotted notes on a pad and went back to sleep for more details.
- When Shelley Duvall's skirt caught in a car door during a take, assistant director Tommy Thompson called for a cut, but Robert Altman loved the accident and had Duvall deliberately catch her dress and skirt in the door in several later scenes.
- After its cinema release, 3 Women was unavailable on home video for almost thirty years, until The Criterion Collection released it in 2004.
- Although a screenplay was finished, Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek improvised much of their performance, especially Duvall's silly ramblings and dating advice, and Duvall also drew up her character's recipes and diary.
