Plot summary

Ben and Katie Jordan have been married fifteen years and live with their two children, Erin and Josh, in a comfortable home. The marriage that once made them happy has become a daily performance put on for the children; by themselves, the two cannot stand each other. They first crossed paths on the staff of a comedy show and hit it off at once. With Erin and Josh sent to summer camp, Ben and Katie begin a trial separation, each trying to remember what first drew them to the other. The marriage returns in flashbacks, and the pair also talk about it in interview segments that take the form of sessions with a therapist. Their separate groups of friends trade news about their own relationships, intimacy included, while Ben and Katie say nothing about theirs.
