Plot summary
Alex Sheldon is a writer with writer's block and a gambling problem. He owes $100,000 to the Cuban mafia, which gives him thirty days to pay or be killed, and his publisher will not release the money for his novel until the manuscript is finished. Alex hires Emma Dinsmore, a headstrong stenographer, to take his dictation. The book he dictates is set in the 1920s and follows Adam Shipley, a writer hired to tutor the children of a French woman, Polina Delacroix.
