Plot summary
America in 2176 has lost every record of its own past, and the world is near collapse. The last person who lived while those records still existed tells the authorities the answers lie in 1776. Adam-11, Chanel-6 and Heinz-57 are sent back with Adam-11's time machine and twelve hours to retrieve documents such as the Constitution. Adam-11 would rather use the machine to reach Ick Icky Beach, a resort that no longer exists, and agrees only when he meets Chanel-6 and is promised fuel. The machine lands them two hundred years off target, in 1976, which they take for the era they were sent to. Two teenagers, Chris Johnson and Tommy Sears, help them, while Rodney Snodgrass, who believes they are aliens, wants their craft for his science fair project.

- Production designer Danny Talpers built the film's time machine prop out of two hot tubs, a reference to how popular hot tubs were in the 1970s.
- Rather than pay for the more expensive cutaway technique, Lucas Reiner saved money by simply moving the camera back and forth during dialogue.
- The film's budget was tight, so crew members brought in their own 1970s period items to supplement the props used on screen.
- Lucas Reiner noted that signing David Cassidy of The Partridge Family to the project led other 1970s stars to sign on as well, with producer Susie Landau handling casting.
