Plot summary
Four angels, Charlie, Earl, Gonzales and Ruth, have been running Heaven for twenty-five years. God returns to the office and is displeased by what he finds on Earth. He wants another flood and a fresh start, though he promised after the first one that there would never be another. The angels ask him to think again. Their argument is that if one typical man can reform, all of mankind can. The man they pick is Zack Melon, a failed inventor threatened by loan sharks who decides to hold up a bank. The teller at that bank is Debbie Wylder.

- Director John Herzfeld said the original cut was considered to be too controversial and included Orson Welles as God; it was never screened for test audiences, and upon studio alterations Gene Hackman was brought in to replace Welles and record new audio.
- Olivia Newton-John's end-credits song "Twist of Fate" proved so popular on radio that composer Patrick Williams was hired to change the score originated by Bill Conti to incorporate it; a November 1983 press screening was canceled and final prints were not ready until the week the film opened.
- Two of a Kind was nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards: Worst Picture, Worst Actor for Travolta, Worst Actress for Newton-John, and Worst Director and Worst Screenplay for Herzfeld.
- The album was further bolstered by featuring "Ask the Lonely", a song which the rock group Journey had initially intended for their 1983 album Frontiers but which was only available on this soundtrack album.
- The film was originally called Second Chance and was to be directed by Richard Rush; principal photography eventually took place from May 9 to July 21, 1983, beginning in New York City with two weeks of location shooting.
- "Twist of Fate" reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, the last of Olivia Newton-John's 15 Top 10 Pop hits.
