Jack Dodson
Biography
Jack Dodson was an American actor, born in Pittsburgh, who worked mostly in television and was best known for playing Howard Sprague on The Andy Griffith Show and later on the spin-off Mayberry R.F.D. Andy Griffith hired him for that part in 1966 after seeing him on Broadway in Hughie, and he first turned up on the show as the insurance agent Ed Jenkins in the episode Lost and Found. He went on to guest roles in Hazel, The Virginian, Maude, Barney Miller, Newhart, Matlock, Mama's Family and St. Elsewhere, and had a recurring part as Mickey Malph on Happy Days. He appeared in every episode of the sitcom All's Fair during the 1976-77 season. His films included The Getaway (1972), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983), and he reprised Howard Sprague in the 1986 television movie Return to Mayberry. He died in 1994.
