Plot summary
Willie Conway plays jazz piano in New York and goes back to Knight's Ridge, Massachusetts, the town where he grew up, for a ten-year high school reunion. He stays with his father, a widower, and his younger brother. His friends never left. Mo has a wife and family; Paul and Tommy own a snowplowing business. Jan dumped Paul after he refused her marriage ultimatum, and he now piles snow in her driveway. Tommy carries on with Darian, his married high school sweetheart, behind the back of his girlfriend Sharon. Willie cannot decide whether to marry Tracy Stover, and he gets to know Marty, the thirteen-year-old girl next door. Andera, visiting from Chicago, draws the men's attention.

- Screenwriter Scott Rosenberg wrote the film in Needham, Massachusetts, while waiting to see if Disney would use his Con Air script. In the worst winter his hometown had seen, tired of writing movies with people getting shot and killed, he turned to friends who could not deal with turning 30 or with commitment.
- Director Ted Demme had the entire cast come to Minneapolis and live together for two to three weeks before the shoot so that they could bond.
- Rosenberg later turned the film's aftermath into a second work: he co-created the 2007 TV series October Road, based on how his real friends reacted to seeing a movie about their own lives, setting it in the same fictional town of Knight's Ridge with similar characters and jobs.
