Plot summary
Verne Miller leaves prison and sets out to make a place for himself in Al Capone's organization. The work he takes on is killing, and he does it well enough to become one of Capone's top assassins, with Capone's trust following. Two things work against him. His health is failing, and he has a large opinion of himself. Both push him toward trouble with the law and with Capone.
