Plot summary
On Cybertron, the Autobots are losing their war with the Decepticons, and Optimus Prime sends the young scout B-127 to Earth to prepare a base. B-127 crash-lands in California in 1987, interrupting a training exercise held by Sector 7, the secret agency that watches for alien activity. Colonel Jack Burns treats him as an invader, and in the forest the Decepticon Blitzwing tears away his voice box, then damages his memory core. Weakened, B-127 takes the shape of a yellow Volkswagen Beetle and shuts down. Charlie Watson, still grieving her father and cool toward her mother's boyfriend Ron, finds the Beetle at her Uncle Hank's junkyard and takes it home. When she starts it, the Autobot inside wakes, and the signal he gives off draws Shatter and Dropkick toward Earth.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Peter Cullen said he was brought in to dub over a temp track recorded by voice actor Jon Bailey for Optimus Prime, because the character was fully animated in a single day and he had to match Bailey's delivery; he was disappointed at how his performance came across and the way he was treated.
- To give Hailee Steinfeld something to act against on set, the special effects team built a life size reference model of Bumblebee: a full size copy of his head, chest and upper arms, with paint detail and light-up eyes.
