Plot summary
Widow Birdy Wemys has given her house over to the Brethren, a fundamentalist sect whose Minister preaches fire and brimstone, and her introverted son Kenny has fallen in with them too. Birdy is a diabetic, and the Brethren forbid medicine, so her insulin must be obtained in secret. A nurse, Brigitte, is hired against Birdy's wishes to look after her; what she sees of the sect alarms her, and she tells her sister Paddy, a journalist who wants to write about religious cults. Paddy's plan is to get inside the Brethren by presenting herself as an unmarried woman expecting a child who is asking for forgiveness. In his daily life Kenny absorbs the Minister's teaching, and he is repelled by the sin and temptation he sees around him.
