Plot summary
In 1865, with Richmond under siege, Union prisoners Cyrus Harding, Herbert Brown, Neb Nugent and war correspondent Gideon Spillet break out of Libby Military Prison. They take a gas balloon and force a Rebel guard, Pencroft, to pilot it, since he knows how. A storm drives them west over the Pacific, and they crash on an unknown island of tropical jungle, harsh plains and active volcanoes. A giant crab seizes Neb while they explore; the others free him and the creature becomes their first meal. The men then find two unconscious Englishwomen, Lady Mary Fairchild and her niece Elena, cast ashore by the same storm. The castaways take shelter in a cave that another castaway once used.
